It is a perennial shrub native to the Andean region of Peru and spread throughout South America, where it has been cultivated for thousands of years for its sweet fruit. Although there are several varieties, this berry is generally oval, similar to papaya, about 10 to 15 cm, golden yellow with purple veins when ripe.1 It is very refreshing due to its high water content (92%), being Similar in flavor and aroma to the cucumis melo melon, but the two plants are not related to each other. It has high percentages of vitamin C, A and carbohydrates.
It is generally consumed directly as fresh fruit, but it can also be in salads on some occasions, in juices or more elaborate desserts.
