Dragon Fruits are native to Central and South America, where they are known as Pitahaya. They are one of the most widely distributed members of the cactaceae family, and are now found on six continents. There are three species of dragon fruit in the genus Hylocereus and one species in the genus Selenicereus. Varieties of Hylocereus guatemalensis, Hylocereus polyrhizus, and Hylocereus undatus as well as hybrids of these three species are grown commercially worldwide. Selenicereus megalanthus is grown commercially on smaller scales in South America and is especially popular in Colombia.
Varieties
The dragon fruit flesh can be white, red or magenta, all to varying degrees, depending upon variety. The red-fleshed varieties contain lycopene, a natural antioxidant known to fight cancer and heart disease, and lower blood pressure. Despite the health benefits and its spectacular appearance, the fruit has gone virtually unnoticed for centuries. Today it is the leading fruit export of multiple countries including Ecuador.Â
Dragon Fruit Flavor
Surprisingly, despite being such an exotic fruit, dragon fruit’s flavor is not as exotic as you might think. People often say dragon fruit tastes like a cross between a kiwi, a pear, and a watermelon. It’s mildly sweet (though this varies by type), slightly crunchy from the seeds, and quite refreshing.
White Dragon Fruit
This version of dragon fruit has pink skin and white flesh with black seeds on the inside. It is the most common dragon fruit available and it is known for its sweet taste.
Red Dragon Fruit
This version of dragon fruit shares a deep red color between its skin and the interior flesh. This has a stronger taste than its white counterparts, it has a texture akin to a kiwi fruit, and eating it will likely stain your fingers.
Yellow Dragon Fruit
This version of dragon fruit has yellow skin and a white flesh inside. Native to South America, its texture is the firmest of the dragon fruit variations, and its taste is considered the richest.Don't miss out on experiencing these exotic dragon fruits at C&R Agroexport.
