Dragon Fruit Now Leads Non-Traditional Fruit Export Sector

Dragon fruit is now at the forefront of the non-traditional fruit export sector in Ecuador, experiencing a 72% growth in 2023. Palora, in Morona Santiago, is the primary production center for Ecuadorian yellow dragon fruit.

The United States captures 80% of Ecuador's dragon fruit exports. The remarkable export figures of fresh dragon fruit achieved in 2023 mark a significant milestone for Ecuador's agricultural industry.

According to the Central Bank of Ecuador (BCE), exports of this fruit reached $171.7 million, an increase of 72% compared to 2022, making it one of the main non-traditional products in the country's export offerings.

"The Ecuadorian dragon fruit reached a record $172 million in exports, with a volume of 54,000 tons in 2023. It now leads the sector of non-traditional fruit exports," stated the Minister of Production, Sonsoles García, on her X account.

United States as the Main Market

Dragon fruit exports have been growing since the opening of the U.S. market in 2017, the Peruvian market in late 2022, and the Chinese market since April 2023.

The United States solidifies its position as the primary market for dragon fruit, receiving 80% of Ecuador's production, equivalent to $137.1 million. Other significant markets include Hong Kong with 6.55%, Spain with 3.53%, Peru with 2.35%, and Canada with 1.85%.

With the Free Trade Agreement with China underway, a boom in dragon fruit exports to the Asian giant is expected, as the 20% tariff will immediately be reduced to 0% once it comes into effect. The production of this fruit supports around 15,000 families who are directly involved in the industry. Ecuador produces multiple varieties of dragon fruit but ninety percent of the production is concentrated on the yellow variety, which originates from the Ecuadorian Amazon.

Dragon fruit is notable for its unique tropical flavor and aroma, thanks to the privileged conditions of Ecuadorian soil. Additionally, it has the Denomination of Origin "Pitahaya Amazónica de Palora," and holds certifications for Good Agricultural Practices (BPA) and international certifications like Global GAP.
